Simplified Data Settings Control: Empowering Users with Easy Data Management

Lucidity is a browser plugin dedicated to providing users with diverse perspectives on data privacy. Through category-based data privacy settings and accessible and digestible data information sharing, Lucidity offers users easier control of their data settings, putting the power back in users’ hands.

To capture different user groups, the final solution includes in-web experience and three themed pages, presenting data privacy from various perspectives.

Background
Early 2021, I noticed websites are presenting this data privacy management pop up. While I care about my data sharing, I always click accept all to quickly get into the websites. 

While websites are providing users with this option, but the way it is designed prompt users to accept all cookies.

Therefore, I had my initial hypothesis
People care about their data privacy, but feel a lack of control.

COMPETITOR ANALYSIS
I studied three popular websites, to study how existing platforms communicate data collection and find ways to improve.

Facebook

Facebook provides users very comprehensive information about data collection and tries to be accessible by categorizing the data.

Complicated user journey once user want to dig into a kind.

Lengthy paragraphs introduce each categorized data and prevent users from understanding the information.
Apple

Apple clearly shows what data has been collected by each program and function.

Data listed are ambiguously named. Users cannot fully understand what specific data has been collected.

Google uses graphics and videos that clearly explains data collection and related information.

When users try to take actions to manage their data settings through hyperlinks, they are taken to pages with overwhelming paragraphs.

ONLINE SURVEY
I conducted online survey to quickly gain baseline understanding of people's perspectives toward data privacy.

Out of 31 participants,
52% feel lack of control over data collection. 78% think data privacy is an important topic to them and 65% would read news relating to data privacy. 
CARD SORTING
Gained a deeper knowledge on how people differentiate the treatment of various data types 

Participants think their data in regards to
PII should be confidential and cannot be compromised. They do think data collection comes with benefits, such as providing better-personalized experiences. Some people are willing to give up certain level of privacy in exchange for better experiences.

Problem
Findings from secondary research justify my initial hypothesis that

People care about their data privacy, but feel a lack of control.

Inconvenient data settings flow because existing data consent message primes user to accept all cookies, hiding specific data control from clicks away.
Lose interest in data with complicated and overwhelming information displayed on the existing websites.
Hard to understand and manage data because websites present data in vague and ambiguous terms.

To categorize my brainstorm ideas into groups of different product directions and identify features to further explore through design
LOW_FI PROTOTYPE
I concluded three design directions and brought them into first round user testing
Direction 1
Quick group data settings based on website categories
Test Finding
People responded well to accessible group settings

People find the secondary contents on the page not related enough to the main group settings feature.
Direction 2
Quick and bulk data settings based on collection purpose
Test Finding
People were not sensitive to data purposes and instead they pay more attention on their own activities.

People like the option to quickly edit data in bulk, but need more context

Data analysis for better decision making
Test Finding
Large amount of information alerts people and promotes them to take actions

Graphic analytics are not as intuitive as I thought they would be. Testers find them to be confusing and labor-intensive.

Refine data categories to be more correlated to the group settings  |  Brainstorm on real content so people have more context to react to
SUMMARY
People are looking for ways to take quick actions on their data settings, whether it’s through our advice or short cut settings.  |  There is a split in opinion on which categorization makes more sense. It comes down to a personal preference.

I decided to capture these different user groups by better categorizing features into three themed pages to present data privacy from various perspectives.

Clarity is what users are mostly looking for when managing their data settings.

Users are more comfortable taking actions on features that tend to be more familiar and adaptable, for example, wordings with a second person.

Users hope to see substantial improvement in their data sharing after taking action.

Reflection
INSIGHTS
I found out that the main reason for people to be ignorant of data privacy is due to a lack of ways to intervene. When we provide users with accessible and digestible data privacy settings and insights, users expressed strong intention to take proactive actions.
TAKEAWAYS
I learned card sorting is a good UX tool that inspires insightful conversations with the participants and uncovers unspoken thinkings on the topic.

Iterative design and comparative testing encourage participants to focus on the macro perspective of the design(focus on the big picture rather than commenting on visual details, to help us iterative on overall product directions through the early design process) and facilitate specific perspectives/thinkings to assist us through the early design process with clear visions.
